Top Doctor Warns: Supplements and Capsules That Threaten Heart and Liver Health

A leading cardiologist has issued a stark warning about certain supplements and capsules, revealing they could significantly increase the risk of heart attacks and liver failure. The advice from Dr. Evan Levine, a New York cardiologist, targets specific products that could be silently damaging your health.

Dangerous Supplements: The Doctor’s Warning

Dr. Levine, a cardiologist at Mount Sinai in New York, has cautioned that some supplements, particularly those plant-based, can cause lasting harm. Additionally, he noted certain gel capsules might also jeopardize heart health, potentially triggering strokes.

Niacin’s Hidden Risks

Niacin, also known as vitamin B3, is crucial for several bodily functions. It is readily available in foods such as meat, fish, rice, nuts, and seeds. However, Dr. Levine advises caution as it can trigger heart damage through inflammation.

A 2024 Nature Medicine study found that consuming niacin can double the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases

A 2024 research study indicated that niacin could double the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Experts suggest that the recommended niacin amount for adults is 14–18 mg/day. High doses ranging from 2,000 to 6,000 milligrams daily may cause severe heart damage.

Green Tea Extract: A Double-Edged Sword

Green tea extract, known for its antioxidant properties, also poses risks. Dr. Levine warns against excessive consumption, citing potential liver toxicity. While a beverage of green tea is often safe, its extract can damage the liver, especially in high doses.

Sweeteners and Cardiovascular Concerns

Both erythritol and xylitol, commonly found in sugar-free products, can also elevate the risk of cardiovascular events. Dr. Levine explained that these sugar substitutes can increase the chance of blood clots.

The Risks of Gel Capsules

Certain supplements are packaged in gel capsules, often made with phthalates. These chemicals may irritate the arteries and cause inflammation. Dr. Levine urges moderation, stating that exposure, especially through pills, can cause swelling and irritation.

According to the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, with approximately 695,547 deaths in 2022. (Source: CDC 2022)
