CAPITAL – May 14, 2024 – on May 22, 2025, the Earth experienced a close encounter when the house-sized asteroid 2025 KF zipped past. This celestial object, discovered on May 19, came within approximately 115,000 kilometers of our planet. Traveling at an estimated 41,650 kilometers per hour, it sparked curiosity, though experts from NASA quickly confirmed asteroid 2025 KF posed no threat – a fact now confirmed by all reliable sources.
house-Sized Asteroid to Buzz Earth: What You Need to Know
A close Encounter
Earth is set for a near miss with an asteroid roughly the size of a house. The asteroid, designated 2025 KF,is projected to pass within approximately 115,000 kilometers of earth. To put that in perspective, that’s about one-third of the distance between Earth and the moon.
timing is Everything
The closest approach of 2025 KF occurred at 17:30 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT),which translates to 1:30 p.m. Eastern Time in the United States. For those in Indonesia, the event took place at 00:30 Western Indonesian Time (WIB) on Thursday, May 22, 2025.
Speed and Trajectory
According to the National Aeronautics and Space Management (NASA), this asteroid is traveling at a blistering speed of approximately 41,650 kilometers per hour. Its trajectory took it across the Earth’s south pole before it continues on its long orbit around the sun.
Not a Threat
Despite its proximity, experts assure that asteroid 2025 KF poses no danger to our planet. This asteroid is not dangerous even though the distance is classified as close to the earth.
The celestial object passed more than 226,000 kilometers from the moon.
Discovery and Size
Asteroid 2025 KF was first spotted on may 19 by astronomers involved in the MAP project, operating from the Atacama Desert in chile. Estimates place its size between 10 and 23 meters, roughly equivalent to the size of a house. Even if such an asteroid were to enter Earth’s atmosphere, it would likely burn up wholly.
NASA’s Vigilance
since 1998, NASA has tracked nearly 40,000 asteroids that venture near Earth. Of these, approximately 4,700 are classified as perhaps hazardous. Though, scientists estimate that there is a possibility that there is an asteroid that can damage the earth for a century ahead.
Record Breakers
While 2025 KF’s approach is notable, it doesn’t break any records. In 2020, an asteroid about the size of a car zipped past Earth at a distance of only about 2,950 kilometers from the surface.
