Idaho Wildfire Ambush: Gunman found Dead After Killing Two Firefighters
Coeur d’Alene,Idaho – A man is dead after sparking a wildfire adn then ambushing and fatally shooting two firefighters in northwestern Idaho on Sunday.Authorities discovered the suspect’s body at the scene with a gun nearby, ending a tense standoff .
The incident began at approximately 1:21 PM local time when crews responded to a fire on Canfield Mountain,near Coeur d’Alene. Gunshots were reported just 40 minutes later, initiating a barrage of gunfire that left two firefighters dead and another seriously injured .
kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris stated that the suspect intentionally started the fire and launched a “total ambush” on the responding firefighters, who “did not have a chance” . A shelter-in-place order was issued during the standoff but has since been lifted .
Tactical teams used cell phone data to locate the suspect,but were forced to quickly recover the body due to the approaching flames . The suspect’s name and the type of firearm used have not yet been released. Preliminary investigations suggest the suspect acted alone .
Sheriff Norris indicated that investigators beleive additional weapons may be recovered once the scene is safe to re-enter, based on the trajectory of the gunfire and the nature of the victims’ injuries . the coroner’s office will determine the suspect’s cause of death .
