Local Strawberries Face Import Challenge, Inflation
Can Patriotism and Markets Save the Day?
Consumers often face a dilemma when choosing between local and imported goods, especially when prices differ. This article examines the challenges local producers face in Latvia, focusing on the impact of cheaper imports and the role of consumer patriotism in supporting local businesses.
The Price of Patriotism
The question arises: How can buyers support local products when faced with cheaper imports? Is there a mechanism to unite local producers, promoting their goods and encouraging buyers to embrace local options? According to one source, supporting local goods might fit into a 20% price difference. However, if prices are much higher, consumers will naturally consider affordability.
Linda Tunte, editor of a local publication, recently shared her experience buying the first strawberries of the season. She found a local Inčukalns strawberry stand selling berries for 10 euros. She acknowledged this isn’t cheap, noting the high costs of living and expenses faced by producers, including paying employees. She remembered writing about strawberries in June 2023, when the average price was 3 euros per kilogram, rising to 5 euros. The impact of inflation has doubled prices in two years.

“It is today that I went to the ‘hunting’ strawberry – fantastic delicious Inčukalns strawberry stand at the store in Saulkrasti County cost 10 euros,” said Linda Tunte.

Inflation has led to a notable rise in prices across various goods. The Consumer Price Index increased by 3.1% in the Eurozone in March 2024 (Eurostat, 2024).
Alternative Options
Consumers have options for saving money. Imported strawberries, like those from Poland, are often more affordable. However, their taste differs from local varieties. Linda Tunte mentioned that when the season is in full swing, prices will fall, encouraging patience. Another suggestion is to visit local markets, where prices are often lower. Another option is growing strawberries, maybe on a balcony or by a window, creating a better understanding of the value of these berries.
