Liverpool’s Defensive Overhaul: Hato on the Horizon?
Liverpool is poised for significant defensive changes this summer, with potential arrivals and departures reshaping the squad. Key decisions loom for several key players, and the club is actively pursuing a solution to bolster their defensive ranks.
Defensive Re-Shuffling
Reports indicate that Milos Kerkez is close to joining from Bournemouth. The 21-year-old could replace Andy Robertson at left-back. Meanwhile, Robertson might transfer to Atletico Madrid, and Kostas Tsimikas could leave, possibly for Nottingham Forest or Olympiacos.
Regarding the center-back position, there could also be significant changes. Ibrahima Konate, whose contract ends in 2026, might be sold if he does not agree to an extension. Moreover, there’s talk about Jarell Quansah possibly moving to Bayer Leverkusen or another Premier League team.
Hato in the Mix
To address these defensive shifts, Liverpool is considering adding Ajax’s left-back/center-back, Jorrel Hato, to its roster. According to Duncan Castles on The Transfers Podcast, discussions are underway for the Dutch international to move to Anfield this summer.

These talks have taken place with the awareness and openness of Ajax to sell the player. The club wants to reinforce at center-back. They see Hato as a potential backup center-back and left-back, possibly sharing the position with Kerkez. Bringing in Hato wouldn’t be inexpensive if they can make it happen. In fact, player transfers have become a massive business, with the global football transfer market valued at an estimated $9.63 billion in 2023 (Statista).
Hato’s Profile
Hato, 19, has already played over 100 senior club games and has been selected for the Netherlands senior team. Last season, he played 31 Eredivisie matches, contributing six assists, and is under contract with Ajax until 2028.
Hato was spotted at Anfield last season during a Liverpool home game. He was a guest of former Ajax teammate Ryan Gravenberch, who likely pitched the idea of joining the Dutch community at the club.
